Affirmations in the Abstract-Mixed Media Workshop

Saturday, August 21, 2021

Asheville Art Museum

We all need positive reminders now & again and the act of creating art is often felt as a kind of nurturing therapy: Affirmations, meet Abstract Art. This workshop, held this past weekend, was a lot of fun and a complete success. We created a finished piece to represent out own self-affirmation through thoughtfully chosen mediums, colors, and words.

Affirmations are positive statements that can help one overcome obstacles of self-sabotage or negative thought. To choose your own affirmation, first analyze the thoughts or behaviors that you'd like to change in your life, or simply choose a strength you feel the need to remind yourself you possess.

Scroll through the slideshow above to see finished pieces and in-progress work.

With an affirmation in mind, we explored the possibilities of abstract art with the limitless application of mixed media. With collage paper, acrylic paint, metal leaf, and impasto gel, we created an abstract background to feature our unique affirmation, in the form of words, either handwritten in metal leaf, typed out in class on a typewriter, or printed off in your favorite font to be applied via collage in class. We ended up having a finished piece to empower, each of us, everyday.

As always, thank you to the Asheville Art Museum for hosting my workshop, and a HUGE thank you to all that attended! We had plenty of space to spread out as necessary and a beautiful rooftop café & patio to take refreshing breaks. I know we have to pick and choose what we physically participate in these days; thank you for choosing this. I'm looking forward to our next workshop coming up in the fall: Art Nouveau Patterns in Mixed Media.
